Password generator

Make a strong, random password or an easy-to-type passphrase. It's made right here in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Tk7#vWq2-xNm9{eRa4;h

Strong, about 127 bits

Same rules as the generator in the Passyble app. It runs in this page with crypto.getRandomValues: nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is saved.

What makes a password strong?

Three things, and complicated symbols aren't one of them.

  • Long

Every extra character multiplies the work for anyone trying to guess it. Length beats cleverness.

  • Random

People are predictable: names, dates, keyboard patterns. A generator isn't, so there's nothing to guess.

  • Used once

A different password for every site means one leak can't open your other accounts.

Password or passphrase?

Both are strong at the default settings. Pick by how you'll use it.

  • Characters

Best for logins a password manager fills for you. Hard to read, but you never have to. Example: Tk7#vWq2-xNm9{eRa4;h

  • Passphrase

Best when you have to type it yourself, like on a TV, a game console or your computer's login. Example: ravize-tomuda-kelibo4-sanure-pomati

A few good habits.

  • One password per site. Never reuse a password, especially for your e-mail.
  • Let an app remember them. Nobody can remember dozens of random passwords, and you shouldn't have to.
  • Turn on two-step sign-in (2FA) wherever a site offers it.
  • Change a password that leaked. If a site tells you about a data leak, change that password first.
  • Keep your master password to yourself. Make it a passphrase only you know, and use it nowhere else.

Questions

About the generator.

Is it safe to make a password on a website?

Here, yes: the password is made by your own browser, using its built-in secure random numbers, and it never leaves this page. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is saved. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

How long should my password be?

For anything that a password manager fills for you, 20 characters or more is a good choice. If you have to type it, a passphrase of 5 words is strong and much easier to type.

What's a passphrase?

A few random words joined together, like a short made-up sentence. Passyble's words are made-up syllables, so they're easy to say and type, and one word gets a number.

What does the strength meter mean?

It estimates how many guesses an attacker would need. Each step up makes guessing much harder. Strong means more guesses than any computer can realistically make.

Why leave out look-alike characters?

Letters like I and l, or O and 0, are easy to mix up when you read or type a password. Leaving them out makes the password a little shorter in variety but much easier to use.

Do I have to remember these passwords?

No. That's what a password manager is for. Passyble saves them in your vault and fills them in for you, so you only remember one master password.

Let Passyble remember them for you.

Passyble saves your passwords in a vault that's locked on your device, fills them in for you and makes new ones when you sign up. No account needed.
